Welcome
DR CARIN BESTER

I am a clinical psychologist in private practice since 2007. I entered private practice after several years of clinical work at a military hospital in Cape Town, after which I joined a multi-disciplinary team in private practice focusing on children and families.
In private practice I’ve since continued working with families, but also specialised in depth psychology and psycho-therapeutic work (including play therapy) with patients of all ages.
I’m touched by the life journey of each person that I work with – it is a privilege I am deeply grateful for - to be involved with people as each one engages their own process of growth.
In therapy I aim to create a mindful space for each person to find meaning, grow and succeed in personal transformation. I consider personal transformation a life task for all people and the foundation of the work that I share with each patient as we work together in therapy
As Carl Gustav Jung said: 'the meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed.’

What to Expect
I believe that each patient has the internal strength, and resources necessary to foster healing and growth through the therapeutic process. I’ve developed my process of therapy to focus completely on your role as author of your journey of personal transformation, or in the case of parents, as co-authors of your child’s journey. I achieve this focus by ensuring I clearly grasp the critical issues you wish to engage in therapy, by establishing a good patient/therapist fit and by aligning therapeutic interventions to your unique situation.
When coming to me for therapy for the first time, we will start by exploring the reason for you wanting to come for therapy or why you think your child needs therapy. In these first sessions we will explore the nature of the problem you want to deal with and consider suitable interventions based on my assessment of your situation.
As an important point of departure we’ll also consider patient/therapist fit, which I consider hugely important in meaningful therapy. This means that you’ll have the opportunity to decide if you want to continue with therapy after the initial session/s and/or conversations. Therapy remains an emotional experience and can initially be unsettling depending on how far you’ve progressed in your personal journey. For this reason, I consider it extremely important to align the therapeutic interventions with each person’s needs, goals and development phase.

But if you travel far enough, one day you will recognize yourself coming down the road to meet yourself. And you will say - YES!
